The Mating Problem
Appropriate age for mating for a female guinea pig is four to six months, when she starts giving birth to puppies.
You are to provide good space to guinea pigs. You should also know that female guinea pig cycle is 16 days. However, the female will only mate during 8-24 hours duration.
The sign of mating is that the male will start strolling towards female lowering his head, when he is aroused. He acts deliberately in this way to allure his love interest, though it seems he is stepping randomly.
When the guinea pigs mate, they create dull sound. Therefore, you should not feel uneasiness, if you have not heard such sounds before. Even you will hear the repeated sounds of their bottoms beating each other.
Sometimes males resort to display a particular mating 'dance'. They move their front legs or any other organs to lure the female. They even start different movements from one side to another side to attract her.
It may seem to you quite funny. Isn't it? However, you should remember that their mating ceremony has been going on for centuries. It has come to this after a long growth and development. It is like, as if you are going to laugh; however, it is better to leave them.
The female displays her interest by uttering unusual shrieks showing her nervousness and enthusiasm. If the male guinea pig is close to her, these squeaks are rather louder.
However, if she is not interested due to any natural reason, she cuts and bites him- or simply escape leaving him there. Sometimes, she may have to urinate on his face to ward him off, if the male shows extreme perseverance.
In case, the female guinea pig is ready, but male is not ready, she uses the same leisurely steps technique to lure him that he uses to lure her.
However, you should not worry about everything they are doing. It is natural to them and they know it well. Sometimes, the female pig makes advances towards the male as a sign to want him to mate.
A male guinea pig can have the strength to mate up to ten or more female guinea pigs at a time. Although, that seems too excessive, but it is a fact. It is up to you whether you want several puppies at one time? If you have enough space for coming puppies! Then, Ok.
